Sheriff Lindo’s anti-gravity ’80s dubs are back in orbit on EM Records, tethered on the Japanese label next to their ‘Aftershock Dubs’ set spanning the Australian desk whiz’s decades of work intersecting his superb post-punk/industrial work with Andy Rantzen as Pelican Daughters.
Eight full fat dubs are imprinted with the digit grease and fader flicking timing of Anthony Maher aka Sheriff Lindo, who exerts his authority from top to bottom with a notably odd slant on the classic sound. First issued in 1988, with originals mastered by Tom Allard (Severed Heads) and now trading for daft money, the set hails Maher as an Antipodean outlier of dub music, far detached from its locus but with a firm grasp of its tekkerz and phantasmic, dematerialised dynamic placing him like Oz’s answer to Adrian Sherwood.
Lurching into action with the plasmic organ chords and double dipped bassline on Dub House of Horrors’, he shows how to rock a dry drum machine to its bones in a zinging highlight ‘! (Dub Version)’ reminding us of early E.g. Oblique Graph, and steps out big-boned fashion on the 8’ trotter ‘Grossly Overweight Dub’. There’s chef’s kiss doses of splashing spring reverb and etheric synth vamps in another standout ‘Dub Express’ reminding to the Tempo Riddim, plus super slow melodica work in ‘Dread-ging the River’, and super dark parting shots culminating the industro-dub duppy ‘Eastern Bloc’.
