Makonde Roots is an Afro-Lusophone roots reggae band formed with the mission of uniting music, ancestry, and social awareness. Inspired by the Makonde people—known for their cultural strength, deep spirituality, and ancestral art—the band was born as an encounter between Africa and the diaspora, carrying in its sound the struggles, resistance, and identity of Portuguese-speaking peoples.
Founded in São Paulo by musicians of diverse origins, Makonde Roots combines traditional Jamaican reggae, Afro-Mandinka rhythms, Southern African percussion, and modern harmonies. The band conveys messages of cultural appreciation, combating inequalities, preserving nature, and uniting peoples.
The name Makonde Roots reflects the group's central philosophy: to be root, to be resistance, to be living memory. Just as the Makonde sculpt masks and statues that hold stories, the band sculpts its songs as symbols of identity, struggle, and spirituality.
On stage, Makonde Roots presents an intense show, marked by deep beats, meditative melodies, firm bass lines, and vocals that blend Portuguese, English, and echoes of Africa. Each song is constructed like a ritual, a call to origins, and an invitation to reflection.
Today, the band seeks to take its art beyond borders, connecting Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, and São Tomé and Príncipe in a single vibration: the vibration of the root that never dies.
